Engineer-in-Training


Overview
This position will provide practical experience towards achievement of a Professional Engineering designation by providing opportunities to contribute to the Engineering and Public Works Division and the Transportation department.

Examples of key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Providing project management and contract administration on Capital and other projects.
  • Inspecting projects for accuracy and completion.
  • Performing detailed engineering design.
  • Performing functional engineering design for capital projects.
  • Providing planning support particularly for capital projects. 
  • Communicating and corresponding with consultants, private and City contractors, private utility owners and regulatory agencies.      
  • Reviewing consulting engineer’s designs and reports.
  • Providing technical assistance to other City divisions.
  • Liaising with other City Divisions and the public.


The  Engineer-in-Training position includes varying levels of responsibility associated with the current Engineering and Public Works or Transportation Planning work program. The successful candidate will  rotate through  various City departments, including Engineering Design and Construction, Engineering Planning, Transportation, Public Works, Sustainability and District Energy, and Capital Buildings.

The successful candidate will provide project management and/or technical support for the following:

  • Utility Capital projects ranging in value from $100,000 to $10M;
  • Transportation Capital projects;
  • Building Capital projects;
  • Public Works operations projects;
  • District energy infrastructure development, including coordinating with private developers for district energy utility connections;
  • Procurement of consultant and contractor services;
  • Assist in administering and maintaining engineering specifications, procedures and bylaws;
  • Asset management and long-term planning of City infrastructure, including water, sanitary, roads, drainage, dikes and buildings;
  • Review development applications and servicing agreements and administer legal agreements;
  • Review of engineering studies; and
  • Perform site inspections


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Ability to quickly learn new procedures and techniques.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of internal and external contacts over the phone and in person.
  • Skill in written and oral communication skills.
  • Skill in the use of computer applications, such as Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Ability to apply computer applications to engineering projects.
  • Ability to use REDMS or a similar records management system.
  • Ability to successfully clear a Police Information Check.


Qualifications and Experience:

  • Completion of a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil, Electrical or Mechanical Engineering.
  • Previous work experience in a Civil, Electrical, Transportation or Mechanical Engineering setting is preferred.
  • A valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence for the Province of British Columbia.
  • Must be registered or willing and able to register as an Engineer-in-Training with Engineers and Geoscientists British Columbia


Working Conditions:
Duties are mostly performed in an office environment, with some construction site visits and inspections. Some field work may be required.
